Cultivation of mud crabs in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka produces about 0.56 million tons of sea and freshwater fish a year and imports 49,000 tons of fish a year despite a 200-mile sea limit. There are many ways in which Sri Lanka can earn foreign exchange through the lagoon fishing industry around Sri Lanka, among which mud crab farming is a major one. Techniques have been introduced to cultivate mud crabs in coastal as well as inland areas.

Vertical Mud Crab Farming

Growing mud crabs in an artificially processed vertical chamber can yield more in less space. In a developed country like Singapore, mud crabs are usually sold at Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 8,000 per kilo. Crab products are in high demand in Singapore, Italy, and many other countries with the tourism industry. Improving the cultivation of mud crabs with the patronage of the government can pave a successful path to bring foreign exchange into Sri Lanka.
