Greenhouse Construction in Sri Lanka: A Step-by-Step Guide

Many people are now turning to crop cultivation in shelters and the number of people turning to it is on the rise. This is mainly due to increased demand for high-quality vegetables and fruits for export, high insect and pest infestation and high cost of pest control, as well as abnormalities in rainfall and temperature.

Best Investment for future

As the Food prices in Sri Lanka recorded an inflation rate of  22.1 %  in December of 2021 compared to last month 17.5 %. So investing in Agriculture is the best investment rather than holding your money in fixed deposits which gives you 12 % interest rates annually.

Why grow crops inside a protected house

  1. Can be grown all year round. -  some crops can be grown only at selected times of the year. Some crops do not tolerate high temperatures, others do not tolerate cold, and some crops suffer from rain damage. Inside the shelter, we can control the temperature as required and grow the crop so that we can cultivate all year round in the shelter as we can prevent the damage caused by the rains. Therefore, it is possible to supply the market uniformly throughout the year, and vegetable products can fetch higher prices at shorter times than the market supply.
  2. Minimal damage to vegetables and fruits by insects - This is a safe house so it will not be harmed by insects like the crops grown in the open air. Because they have blocked all access to the house.
  3.  Get the most out of pesticides - This is a closed system so you do not have to use as many pesticides as you do in the open air. Maximum results can be obtained with a small space.
  4.  Being able to accurately provide the nutrients needed for plant growth - What we do know is that most of the fertilizers used in open field cultivation are absorbed into the soil without any use, even by water. But in a safe house, the plant can get the amount of fertilizer it needs.
  5.  Being able to harvest the crop on time - It is very important to harvest and supply the crop on time when cultivating the crop for export. Targeted and planned cultivation and harvesting can be done in safe houses.

Classification of Protected Houses

1. Fully Protected Houses

  •      Polytunnel
  •     Greenhouses

2. Semi-protected houses

3. Shade or Net houses

4. Other Plant Houses
